Take Your Drumming to the Next Level
Here is how I generally structure lessons when working with students.
- Proper technique using various rudiments and exercises. It’s important to learn how to hit the drums correctly while staying relaxed. Having a good sound and speed depends on this.
- Reading music for snare drum and drum set. Learning to read music only increases your opportunities for different types of playing situations.
- Playing with a metronome or click. I use this for exercises, reading and learning different beats. Being able to keep a steady tempo is probably the most important thing a drummer can learn.
- Different styles. I teach my students how to play rock, funk, jazz, blues, country, Latin, and more.
- Playing to songs. Once you learn how to play the beat in a certain style, then it’s time to play to music and learn to play along to a song in an appropriate way. That’s where it really gets fun.
I try to incorporate all of these thing into each lesson, if possible. That way my students are becoming well rounded players capable of doing so much more than students who only focus on one thing, such as playing fast rock beats and fills.
Adult Students
Since adults tend to have very busy lives and limited time to practice, I am more flexible in teaching them what they are interested in. For example, if someone really wants to play jazz and has no interest in playing rock, I will respect their wishes and go in that direction.
Lessons and Pricing
I recommend 60 minute drum lessons weekly, but I offer 45 minute lessons as well. A 60 minute lesson is $60 and a 45 minute lesson is $45. Lessons are available at my home studio (just minutes from downtown Sarasota), online over Zoom, Skype, Facetime, etc. or at your home for an additional fee.
